BIM Applications

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is unimaginable today without modern BIM applications. These tools, known as BIM tools, play a crucial role in the creation, review and evaluation of model data.

To ensure usability in the BIM area, certification by buildingSMART is advisable. Projects should ideally rely on certified BIM applications, while non-certified ones should be thoroughly checked for suitability based on defined requirements in regulations such as AIA and BAP.

The most important BIM applications are authoring software, review software and viewers. Authoring software enables the creation of model content according to planning, discipline and BIM organizational unit. Review software is used for quality management through review without changes, while viewers only enable the display of model content without review or change functions. Other applications use reviewed model information for their own uses, calculations and evaluations. The selection takes into account the BIM usability, the intended use and acquisition and maintenance costs. Support, training courses and interoperability play a decisive role.

Essential requirements are model-based work with parametrics for precise model elements. The definition of dependencies between these elements ensures the coherence of the BIM model. The integration of logical structural elements enables a comprehensive representation of the building information model.

The ability to dynamically derive plans from the BIM model optimizes the planning process. Applications should also support the creation of lists and quantities from the BIM model to enable efficient data evaluation. Seamless integration with other BIM-enabled software products is essential for a smooth exchange of information between different applications and helps to improve efficiency and collaboration in the BIM environment.

BIM applications should use IFC to display model data. They must automatically recognize dependencies, e.g. when there are changes to the building geometry. Logical structural elements such as floors should be recorded. Dynamic derivation of plans in PDF/DWG/DXF should be automatic. The software must be able to generate evaluation lists for material quantities or costs. Seamless integration with various BIM applications is important for efficient collaboration, regardless of the software group.
