CDE - Common Data Environment

BIM Glossary

CDE - Common Data Environment

The CDE (Common Data Environment) is a crucial cornerstone for efficient collaboration during project implementation and is usually provided by the client. A professional client optimizes its entire portfolio using a CDE in order to minimize setup costs and at the same time utilize the advantages of central data storage and uniform structuring.

In general, a CDE is a web-based platform that brings the entire planning team together and supports the integration of different applications. Within specific disciplines, integrated collaboration platforms are used that enable collaboration within concrete applications. This includes functions such as real-time collaboration down to the element or feature level.

The benefits of a shared CDE solution and workflows include controlled access to project information, clearly defined exchange processes, clearly defined document and model statuses, and transparent communication. Furthermore, responsibility for information within each information container lies with the producing organizational unit. Shared information containers reduce the time and cost of creating coordinated information, and a complete audit trail of information production is available for use during and after each project execution and asset management activity.
