BIM - Building Information Modeling

BIM Glossary

BIM - Building Information Modeling

Definition BIM according to ISO 19650:

„Use of a shared digital representation (image) of a structure (including buildings and infrastructure structures) to facilitate the processes of construction planning, construction and structure operation and to provide a reliable basis for decision-making.“

Definition of BIMaccording to the Digital Planning and Construction Step-by-Step Plan:

„Building Information Modeling is a cooperative and collaborative working methodology that uses digital models of a building to consistently record and manage the information and data relevant to its life cycle and exchange them in transparent communication between those involved or hand them over for further processing.“

BIM stands for BuildingInformation Modeling and represents a digital approach to the planning, construction and management of buildings.

What do the three lettersBIM mean?

The "B" refersto Building and includes all structures such as schools, airports andresidential buildings.

The "I" stands for information and contains digitally networked data about the building, including 3D geometry, material details and functional properties. This structured information enables efficient collaboration and communication between project participants.

The "M" stands for Modeling and refers to the creation, the result (the model itself) and thetools (software) for the entire life of the building.

The core of BIM is the digital building model, which contains geometry and alphanumerics . BIM integrates all relevant data of a building in a virtual data model that covers the entire life cycle - from conception to dismantling. This promotes effective decision-making and enables consistent data and information exchange, reducing delays in the project process. BIM thus supports successful collaboration, coordination and model-based communication in the construction project.
